Gabriel was really only finding Dani to get his blade back, he would need that later if Lucifer was actually out, even though he doubted it. It was easy enough, and he just appeared in her living room, still dark, maybe she wasn’t home yet, but her purse was there so maybe she was… Okay, Gabriel you’re getting distracted, get the blade and get out.
He crept quietly over to the bag and looked inside, his heart sinking when he didn’t see it. Reaching out with his grace he silently searched the house and his hope, or lack thereof, hit rock bottom. It wasn’t even in the house. What the hell had she done with it?
He turned to go into the kitchen and knocked over a picture frame, clattering obnoxiously to the floor as the glass shattered. He froze.
Dani was down the hall in the bathroom, getting ready for bed. She had just pulled on her pajama shirt and had picked up her pants when she heard glass shattering. Her body froze, instinct telling her to run. She ignored it and stepped out of the bathroom quietly, grabbing the bat that was sitting just inside her bedroom door and continuing out to find out who had broken into her house. She quietly passed through the kitchen and paused, listening carefully for any sounds.
She turned the corner, eyes immediately focusing on the dark figure in the room. She swung the bat with as much force as she could muster, aiming for his head. It made contact with an earsplitting crack.
Gabriel turned just in time to see another figure swinging something long down at him, he froze in fear, what if this was the angel blade and he hadn’t been able to sense it? Then it literally crumbled as it made contact with his head, splinters flying in all directions. He stood confused for a moment as his eyes adjusted and he could finally see that it was Dani standing in front of him, holding approximately half of a wooden baseball bat that ended abruptly in a frayed mess of splinters.
“Um. Ow?”
Dani’s eyes squeezed shut and she flinched back as the splinters flew. After a couple seconds she opened her eyes and glared at Gabriel. “The fuck are you doing here Gabriel?” she snapped, not against using the broken bat to stab him.
“God, why can’t you angels just leave me alone!” she snapped, throwing the bat at his head. She’d have to buy a new one tomorrow. Probably an aluminum one.
He flinched, more out of reflex than anything as the bat bounced off of him harmlessly and clattered to the floor alongside the picture frame, “Jeez! I was just coming back to get my blade!”
“That’s unfortunate, because I don’t have it,” she said simply. “Now get out.”
Gabriel looked at her pleadingly, okay so maybe he hadn’t come just to talk. After all, he had just lost a friend he had known since he was a fledgling, his best friend, in the course of one night and yeah, he was pretty torn up about it. He was going to make this right, find the person responsible for it (Because he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was up.) if it was the last thing he did, but right now he could at least try to make amends.
“Can we talk? Please? Doesn’t even have to be about the angel stuff, anything you want.” He was begging and he knew it, but he didn’t know what else to do.
“What could there possibly be to talk about?” she asked, crossing her arms over her chest. She realized then that she was only wearing her shirt and underwear, but she wasn’t going to leave Gabriel alone in her house.
He shrugged, honestly stumped. He just didn’t want to leave. Didn’t want to leave her to be precise. If he did now he would probably just go get drunk again, and that wouldn’t turn out well, especially if he was drinking to forget or in a bad mood, both of which applied at the moment.
“I don’t know. Can we go for coffee tomorrow? Try this all again?”
“If I say yes, will you go away and let me sleep?” she asked. She didn’t really want to see him at all again, but with her luck, her life would never go back to normal now. “I have to work tomorrow. I get off at six,” she said.
Gabriel huffed out a soft chuckle, smirking. He nodded, “I’ll let you get your unneeded beauty rest. And that sounds great. Where do you work?”
